Under Gravel Filters

Under gravel filters work by by circulating the water from under the gravel, through the filter back into the aquarium. The under gravel filter has tiny holes through which water progresses into the filter and uses the air or water pump to force the water up and return it back into the fish tank.

The great advantage of under gravel filters is that they are simple to set up and have no moving parts to go wrong, they use no electric, but you will need an air pump or powerhead to operate the filter which will require electricity.
It is old technology but it works resulting in clean, clear water with little maintenance.

Remember to use a gravel cleaner and periodically clean the aquarium gravel to keep it working effectively.
